Hook to step down as Brisbane 2032 chief executive in December

The 62-year-old head of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee will leave her post upon completion of a four-year contract, prompting an international recruitment process to appoint a successor at a pivotal stage of preparations.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, comes just a week after Brisbane 2032 unveiled its official Olympic and Paralympic emblems and marks a significant leadership change less than six years before the Games. Cindy Hook, who was appointed in December 2022, had previously indicated she intended to remain in the role through to 2032.

"As CEO, I am proud to have built the organisation from the ground up, set the Games vision and Games plan, designed and executed a clear strategy, created the brand narrative and launched incredible emblems and driven early market momentum and commercial wins," Hook said. "The foundations for success have been well laid. This is the right time to hand over to a new CEO for the next phase."

Her departure comes at a pivotal moment for the Games, with organisers facing growing scrutiny over the financial implications of hosting the Games. Speaking at an International Olympic Committee session in Milan in February, Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee President Andrew Liveris acknowledged the original bid budget of A$4.9 billion (€2.9bn) bore 'no resemblance to reality'.

She has understood the importance of delivering not only a successful Games, but also a lasting legacy."

"Taking Brisbane 2032 from a blank page to a fully functioning organisation is an extraordinary achievement and legacy, of which she should be extremely proud," Frizelle said.

Hook arrived at Brisbane 2032 following a senior international business career, having served as chief executive of Deloitte Asia Pacific while based in Singapore. Her appointment was intended to bring financial expertise and organisational experience to the complex task of delivering Australia's third Summer Olympics.
